Description
Wild Red Crowntail Fancy Guppies (Poecilia reticulata var. “Wild Red Crowntail”) are a vibrant and sought-after selectively bred variant of fancy guppies, adored by hobbyists for their intense red, pink, and orange coloration combined with the distinctive crowntail fin structure that creates a dramatic, spiky, crown-like display full of dynamic flair and movement in the aquarium.
Unlike standard roundtail or veil fancy guppies, the Crowntail trait features a caudal fin where individual rays extend outward in a radial, jagged, or starburst pattern resembling a crown or fan with pointed extensions, giving males an explosive, showy tail that flares impressively during displays. High-grade Wild Red Crowntail boast a deep, saturated wild-style reddish orange (sometimes pink) covering much of the body and extending into the fins, sometimes with subtle metallic sheen, black edging accents, or a natural-looking intensity. Males showcase the boldest color saturation, fullest crowntail development, and most striking displays, while females often exhibit softer red tones, rounder bodies, and some fin extension in quality strains.
These peaceful, energetic livebearers reach an adult size of about 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 cm), with males typically smaller and more flamboyantly colored/finned than females. They have a lifespan of 2–3 years in good conditions and are active swimmers that patrol the mid-to-upper tank levels, adding lively motion and constant interest.
Wild Red Crowntail Fancy Guppies are enthusiastic omnivores, readily grazing on algae, biofilm, and detritus while thriving on high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia to enhance their rich red pigmentation and fin health. They’re prolific and relatively straightforward breeders in stable freshwater setups, producing sizable broods of fry that frequently inherit the vibrant red color and crowntail traits with selective pairing.
Beginner-to-intermediate friendly, they excel in community aquariums with stable parameters (pH 6.8–7.8, temperature 72–82°F / 22–28°C), dense planting, hiding spots, and open space to flaunt their dramatic crowntail fins. A varied, protein-rich diet helps maintain intense coloration and robust health.
Overall, Wild Red Crowntail Fancy Guppies are a fantastic choice for aquarists craving bold, fiery, wild-inspired energy, and eye-catching spiky tail elegance in a freshwater tank — providing standout tropical vibrancy with easy, rewarding care.
